Riders take on Loop challenge

Sarah Nurthen, enjoying her first Strava series.

Round 3 of Cycle Tumbarumba’s Strava series had riders on the Masons Hill pine single track, with the tight and twisty ‘Taken for Granted Loop’ set as the challenge. Beginners had to do one lap whilst A, B and C grades battled it out over two.

B grade leader Robert Nurthen made numerous attempts at the course, getting quicker with each one. Robert’s partner Sarah Nurthen has joined her first series riding in the beginners group. Robert said “It’s good to get out with your partner and share common interests, something that is healthy, good fun and has a great sense of community spirit to go with it,” Robert Nurthen said.

All riders enjoyed the great weather during the week which led to perfect track conditions, although some late afternoon riders got caught out by the sunset which quickly darkened the forest, making for interesting riding. A grader James Davies was one rider who took his lights and ended up setting the quickest time of the week, but only just, with 18 seconds separating first, second and third, and about 3 and half minutes separating the top 10.

Round 4 has all riders using the same segment, however the course setters have given the A, B and C graders an extra challenge by adding on 2km of track before they cross the line. This week beginners get their first taste of climbing on a MTB when they go up the aptly named ‘Crank it up’, but once at the top they can enjoy part of Cycle Tumbarumba’s famous flow trail, consisting of big berms, rolling pump sections and fast straights.
